We’ve just waved goodbye to our very first guests at Heima á Fitjum, and our hearts are filled with the warmth of the memories we created together. These weren’t just any visitors; they were the dedicated volunteers of the remarkable ‘Closed for Maintenance‘ project by Visit Faroe Islands. This initiative brings together volunteers from around the globe to help preserve the stunning natural beauty of our islands.
Each day, we worked alongside these wonderful individuals, making the path of Fossá in Vestmanna, learning about their cultures, sharing laughs, and sometimes just soaking in the silence that only the Faroe Islands can offer.
“And we smile, seeing the value in our work. We clink mugs filled with beer, and the stream keeps singing as we rest in the sun. Filled with waffles and stories, us path warriors laugh as we work.” – Jamie Anderson.
Our team leader Fríða treated us to a variety of local delicacies. However, it didn’t end there. To add to our adventure, we ventured on a boat tour to the famous Vestmanna sea cliffs. The boat ride offered stunning views and a unique perspective of the dramatic cliffs with rich birdlife. In addition to the breathtaking natural scenery, we had the unique chance to dine with the mayor of Vestmanna at Vestmanna Camping.
We added a special twist to our morning gathering. Before enjoying our signature Breakfast Club, we all headed to Fitjabeach for a refreshing ocean dip. The experience was both fun and bonding, allowing us to connect with nature and each other in the most authentic way possible. After the dip, we indulged in a delightful breakfast feast, feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle the day’s work ahead.
Later in the evening, we were invited to the local distillery. There, we had a great deal of fun, sampling various spirits and learning about the distillation process. The evening was filled with laughter, music, and singing, creating a joyful conclusion to our day.
Instead of cooling down, we practiced yoga out on the deck, led by our precious Gabriella on our very last day. Stretching into the environment and aligning our breaths with the sounds of the ocean really put the whole experience into perspective.
The ongoing debate in the Faroe Islands frequently centers on the impact of tourism on our archipelago. Initiatives like volunteer tourism and national projects such as “Closed for Maintenance” have allowed smaller communities to experience the positive impacts firsthand, which is truly heartwarming to witness myself. In Vestmanna, the volunteers were welcomed with open arms by the entire village, showcasing the genuine hospitality and community spirit of the locals.
As I reflect on these experiences, it’s clear to me that life at Heima á Fitjum is about fostering a community spirit and making memories that extend beyond the stay. One thing is certain – this will not be the last time I volunteer at Closed for Maintenance!
I humbly have to say that the Great Gray Team has truly made an unforgettable impression on me. From our first encounter at our Dinner Date to our heartfelt goodbye in Tórshavn, this team has never left my mind. Their genuine kindness, the helping hand they always extended, and the lovely conversations that only true friends share have touched my heart deeply. Each moment spent with them felt like a treasure, and I carry those memories with immense gratitude and warmth.
So, until we meet—whether it’ll be over breakfast, during a maintenance project, or a peaceful yoga session on the deck—know that a warm welcome always awaits you at Heima á Fitjum.
With warmth and cherished memories,
Kristina,
