I’m incredibly proud to share that Heima á Fitjum has been featured in The International — a magazine that highlights life, culture, and human connection across borders.
In a beautifully written article titled “Vælkomin Heim,” writer Heather Storgaard (@storgaard.heather) dives into the heart of heimablídni — the Faroese tradition of genuine, heartfelt hospitality. And I’m honored that our small corner of Vestmanna became part of that story.
So, who is Heather?
Heather is a Scottish-Danish writer and researcher. She’s passionate about rural life, local culture, and also building strong futures in small communities. Her work often touches on food and drink, heritage, depopulation, and storytelling. Naturally, that makes her the perfect person to write about the deep sense of connection. Which is exactly we try to create here at Heima á Fitjum.
Moreover, her background is just as impressive as it is inspiring. After earning her master’s degree in Island Studies, Heather joined creative residencies and journalism fellowships across Europe. Harper’s Wine & Spirits even included Heather in their “30 under 30” list of people to watch in the drinks world.
Heimablídni at Heima á Fitjum
Clearly, her love for culture, place, and storytelling shines through every word she writes.
Heather visited us last year and experienced exactly what we love sharing with our guests. From storytelling and homemade rhubarb juice to laughter over fresh rolls, and even a tale or two about the Nix (a mythical water spirit from Nordic folklore). The visit was full of the small, simple moments that define Heima á Fitjum.
Above all, these moments remind us that it’s not about polished perfection. Instead, it’s about real connection. It’s about opening the door and inviting others into the rhythm of Faroese life.
Last but not least, a heartfelt thank you to Heather, for your warm presence, your thoughtful words. Furthermore, for helping share the beauty of local experiences like Heimablídni in the Faroe Islands with the world.

Vælkomin Heim
“Rich storytelling is associated with knitting across the North Atlantic region, and I’m sure that locals would be delighted to share their yarns over a yarn.”
